Brantwood

John Ruskin bought Brantwood in 1871 and transformed it into the finest country house in the Lake District. Set in 250 acres of gardens, pastures and ancient woods, the house is filled with his drawings, paintings and possessions.

Video presentations and displays provide an insight into his work and thinking. Brantwood also has visiting exhibitions, Ruskin readings and drawing workshops.

Jumping Jenny’s overlooks Coniston Water and serves tea, sandwiches and more.

Brantwood can be reached by car, but it’s much better to arrive by boat. Both Coniston Launch and the Gondola stop here.

Brantwood is open all year: daily from mid-March to mid-November and Wednesday to Sunday from mid-November to mid-March.

Went there on the boat last summer. What a fantastic way to arrive! House and gardens are beautiful.

The visit today was wonderful. There is a DVD of the life and works of John Ruskin to give you an insight into the man himself. The house is more or less as he left it in 1900 and is well worth the visit. The Studio has a wonderful exhibition of ceramic tiles a from a very talented artist Maggie Angus Berkowitz and the Gallery has many and varied arts and crafts and all very reasonably priced. To top all that, an excellent meal was served from the Jumping Jenny Restaurant. Some of the best food we have sampled, fresh and beautifully presented. I would recommend spending time at Brantwood. The views over Coniston are stunning whatever the weather.
