Congleton
Congleton is a small town lying on the banks of the River Dane in the south-east corner of Cheshire, roughly midway between Crewe and Macclesfield.
It’s also known as Bear Town due to its association with the cruel, but once popular sport of bear baiting. A popular tale is that in the early 17th century the townsfolk used funds intended for a new bible to purchase a new bear.
During the 18th century Congleton became an important town for silk production. Many of the mills here are now apartments.
Nearby towns and villages include Alsager, Holmes Chapel, Middlewich, and Sandbach.
